Taukkyan War Cemetry holds the remains of Allied soldiers who died during World War I and II. It honors the soldiers for whom no known grave was found. There are 6,374 graves from World War II alone, though only 5576 are identified. The names of more than 27,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died with Myanmar are put as the memorial pillars. After unearthing its inhabitants from four battlefield cemeteries in Sittwe, Mandalay, Meiktila and Sahmaw, this cemetery was opened in 1951. Since opening, this place has been administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the United Kingdom – which currently cares for 23,000 such locations in 154 countries.
When you come to Yangon, you should not leave this beautifully maintained cemetery which is only Twelve miles north of Yangon’s airport. It is also one of several in the region inseparably linked to the Thailand-Burma Railway or so-called “Death Railway” built by Japan during World War Two. You can feel something deep about hardships endured by prisoners and local civilian laborers who built it during the entire war. It becomes the physical reminder for all people about the cost of the war.
