Also known as the Delta region, the Ayeyarwady consists of 26 townships and a number of lakes. The other rivers that branch out from the main Ayeyarwady River are Ngawun, Pathein and Toe. The region covers an area of 35,140 square kilometres, with the Bamar and Karen ethnic groups forming the majority of the population that reside there.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit would be from November to February as the weather is neither too hot to walk around nor too cold to journey on foot. From July to September, heavy rains occur and many roads will be closed due to the floods.

Known as the rice bowl of Myanmar, the region’s significance can be seen through its historic towns of Pathein and Bago, which has many monasteries and pagodas that date back to centuries ago. Further west, the popular beach destinations of Chaungtha and Ngwe Saung are long-time favorites of the locals and provides an attractive seaside view for travellers looking for a beach holiday.

PATHEIN
The capital of Ayeyarwady Region, Pathein is an ancient city and an important delta port of the country. Pathein has a picturesque waterfront and several Buddhist temples to keep tourists engaged. It is famous for Pathein umbrella workshops, where the beautiful traditional umbrellas of Myanmar are made.
MANGROVE FOREST
Visit the enchanting mangrove forests at the Ayeyarwady Delta. You can take a boat ride on the river and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The area is home to a wide range of birds, making it a popular spot among birdwatchers. It also has a large concentration of saltwater crocodiles.
BEACH TRIP
Head to Chathaung for a more hyped-up atmosphere mostly filled with locals–or you can enjoy a dip in Ngwe Saung’s more sophisticated waters and luxurious resorts coupled up north. If you’re travelling on a budget, don’t worry as the southern end has cheaper guesthouses and accommodation for backpackers.
VILLAGES
If you wish to explore the culture and interact with the local people, the villages in Pathein are a good place to start. These are mostly occupied by Bamar and Karen people.
