The Shwezigon Pagoda is located in the heart of Nyaung U town. It is pretty close to the Lion Gate.HISTORY
Shwezigon Pagoda is one of the most notable historical buildings in Bagan and was a centre for prayer during King Anawrahta’s reign. It is a prototypical stupa structure of Myanmar, consisting of a circular gold leaf-gilded stupa surrounded by several shrines and temples. This is one of the most pious places in Myanmar. Buddha’s bone and tooth are believed to be enshrined inside the pagoda.
The construction of this pagoda started during King Anawrahta’s time somewhere between 1059 AD and 1060 AD. However, it was only completed in 1102 AD during the reign of King Kyansittha, Anawrahta’s son. The pagoda has been damaged by several natural calamities over the years and renovated several times. The entire complex is beautifully ornamented with intricately carved wooden sculptures.
