Kuthodaw Pagoda, also known as Mahalawka Marazein, is located at the foot of Mandalay Hill which is located in Mandalay and it is reconstructed at the time of King Mindon in 1857. Breathtaking view of Kuthodaw Pagoda can be seen up of Mandalay Hill with more than hundred pagodas. Kuthodaw Pagoda looks like nearby Sandamuni Pagoda that contains many temples and pagodas in the compound.
History and Background
Kuthodaw Pagoda is modelled on Shwezigon pagoda in Bagan. The world’s largest book is situated inside the pagoda and there are 729 marble slabs in the complex. Each shrine includes one marble slab having 153cm tall with the wide of 107cm and inscribed with the text of Tripitaka namely the Sutta Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka and Abhodhamma Pitaka on both sides. The white shrine lies in row around the compound of the pagoda with wide corridors to walk through. At the centre of the compound is a golden stupa with 72m height. The Kuthodaw Pagoda is also a listed item in UNESCO World heritage sites and is registered in2013. 
Why should visit?
As it is one of the UNESCO World heritage site, we should not miss to visit Kuthodaw Pagoda when we are in Mandalay. We can explore our experiences by discovering the language of Pali, the world’s largest book and more than 700 marble slabs. We can also touch with the ancient architectural techniques of pagoda and about history of pagoda and then we can take the activity of putting Myanmar traditional make-up, Thanaka. The best time to visit is between November and February.
When it open?
It opens daily from 8Am until 8PM.HOW TO GET THERE
- The pagoda is located just east of Mandalay near Royal Palace, Mandalay Hill, Atumashi monastery, Sandamuni Pagoda, Shwenandaw Monastery and also Royal Palace. So, we can easily get there by cars, taxis, or tuk tuk and others from hotels we stay.
